Warm aroma of autumn spices… A fresh cup of Pumpkin Spice Latte… A slice of apple pie… And maybe a good old movie… Doesn’t this sound like a perfect fall evening?

Making a fancy latte at home

When it comes to making a fancy latte at home, you might ask yourself at least one of these questions:

Do I need a fancy espresso machine to make good coffee at home?

The answer is No, you do not.

There’s a few great alternatives to those expensive espresso machines. Here’s a few of my favorite ways to making the best espresso at home, without a fancy coffee machine:

  • Stovetop Espresso Maker (link) – very affordable and makes amazing espresso
  • Coffee Dripper (link) – love this for lightly roasted beans
  • Cold Brew Coffee Maker (link) – perfect for iced lattes
  • French Press (link) – can be used to froth up the milk as well

But if you want to invest into a nice coffee machine, I highly recommend the Briville Barista Express. I’ve had it for about two years now and couldn’t be more satisfied.

How do I froth up the milk?

There’s a few different devices you can use for frothing milk:

  • Handheld Milk Frother (link) – super affordable, gets the job done
  • Breville Milk Cafe (link) – fancier option
  • Electric Milk Frother (link) – still affordable, does all the work for you
  • French Press (link) – great for both, making espresso and frothing up the milk

What is the best coffee to use at home?

When it comes to choosing your coffee, everyone’s preferences are different. But what I do recommend is always using fresh whole beans to ensure the best tasting coffee. Grind the beans freshly at home, and your DIY latte will taste just as good as the one from your favorite coffee shop.

Here’s a few of my current favorite brands of coffee:

  • Lavazza (link)
  • Doma Coffee (link)
  • Bold Bean Coffee Roasters (link)
  • Dallmayr (link)
  • Jacobs Kronung (link)

Let’s make Pumpkin Pie Latte at home

Following these easy steps, you’ll make yourself the best cup of Pumpkin Spice Latte you’ve ever had.

It’s all natural ingredients, no weird flavorings, no colorings. This recipe is also low in sugar and very customizable.

Ingredients for homemade Pumpkin Latte

  • Milk of choice – I am using whole milk this time, but any milk should work. Using evaporated milk form a can, however, will make this latte taste like a delicious slice of pumpkin pie. Note: evaporated milk doesn’t froth very well.
  • Pumpkin puree – homemade or store bought works great. If using store bought, try making sure the only ingredient is pumpkin. I like this one by Libby’s.
  • Sweetener – I recommend using sweetened condensed milk or maple sweetener to make this latte taste like a slice of delicious pumpkin pie, but you can use any sweetener you like.
  • Pumpkin pie spice – adds that signature warm aroma. If you don’t have that on hand, try using a combination of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves. Find a recipe for pumpkin spice here. Or just use plain cinnamon instead.
  • Espresso – see notes above.

How to make Pumpkin Pie Latte:

  1. In a small pot, add pumpkin puree, milk of choice, spices and sweetened condensed milk for sweetness. Mix with a whisk to combine. Cook over low to medium heat until steaming. Take off the heat.
  2. In the meanwhile, prepare espresso any way you prefer. See my tips above.
  3. Once the milk mixture is hot, froth it using your favorite method. I like using IKEA hand held frother for this recipe. Here’s instructions on how to use it.
  4. Pour frothed milk over the espresso. Garnish with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon to make it extra special.
