What is Bruschetta?
Traditionally, bruschetta is a thick slice of bread, rubbed with olive oil and grilled until nice and crispy. It is usually served hot off the grill, topped with garlic and tomatoes or other fun toppings, such as cheese, cured meat or grilled vegetables.
My Honey and Peach Bruschetta is a sweet and savory variation of everyone’s favorite summer appetizer. Because it uses whole and nutritious ingredients, it also makes a perfect breakfast dish.
Ingredients for Honey and Peach Bruschetta
I love having fun with my bruschetta and experimenting with different toppings and flavors. Let me give you a list of simple ingredients to recreate my recent favorite flavor combination.
But just as always, feel free to swap some ingredients for what you like or have on hand. I’ll include some great substitution ideas below.
Toasted Sourdough
We’ll need toasted or grilled sourdough bread for the base. I like to use my homemade Rye Sourdough bread for this recipe. But feel free to use any bread you have on hand. Italian bread works great too!
I like to use my air fryer to quickly toast bread. You could use a grill, toaster or oven instead. Whatever is the easiest for you.
Creamy Cheese
When it come to cheese for bruschetta, use the one you enjoy the most. Goat cheese or whipped cream cheese goes really well on toasted sourdough. Another great option is ricotta cheese.
What I decided to use this time is a mixture of farmer’s cheese and vanilla skyr (Icelandic style yogurt). Both ingredients are very creamy and delicious, while high in protein and very nutritious.
You can make your own farmer’s cheese, using my easy recipe, or buy it online or at your local European market. And here’s a link to my favorite vanilla skyr, in case you’ve never tried it.
Juicy Peaches
Peaches are in season right now, so they taste the best. So sweet and juicy! Perfect for a little summer bruschetta.
In case you don’t have any peaches on hand, try swapping them for sliced strawberries, grapes, pears, apples or nectarines. I’ve also heard pomegranate makes a delicious winter bruschetta topping.
Liquid Honey
A light drizzle of honey adds a touch of sweetness and just brings the whole dish together.
I like to buy local honey form Costco. It’s always a great deal there. Here’s another great honey option for you.
Balsamic Glaze
Balsamic glaze is an optional ingredient, since we’re already using honey. However, I think it adds a unique little touch to the honey and peach bruschetta, making it even more flavorful.
Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
Ok, I know not everyone likes the combination of sweet and spicy. If you’re one of those people, just skip this ingredient. But I think, adding a little spicy kick to this creamy and sweet bruschetta brings it to a whole new level of deliciousness.
At least give it a try and tell me what you think. Nothing wrong with feeling adventures once in a while and trying new flavor combinations, right?
Toasted Walnuts
Walnuts add a fun little crunch. They’re also a great source of healthy fats and a little bit of extra protein.
Feel free to use any nuts you like. I’d try adding sliced almonds, cashews, or toasted pecans.
You can also just skip the nuts, if you prefer. This honey and peach bruschetta will still taste amazing!
Course Salt
Just a touch of salt will balance out the rest of those fun flavor we’re using.
How to add even more flavor to the Bruschetta
This Honey and Peach Bruschetta is already very flavorful just as is. But if you’re feeling extra fancy, here’s a list of fun flavor additions:
- fresh thyme
- fresh basil or mint
- a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
- raspberry vinegar
- prosciutto (my favorite sweet and savory combo)
How to serve Honey and Peach Bruschetta
Like I’ve mentioned above, served on its own, this bruschetta makes a great summer appetizer or a pretty well-balanced breakfast.
In case you wanted to pair it with something else for a complete meal, here’s some ideas:
- grilled shrimp and salad (recipe for shrimp from natashaskitchen.com)
- grilled lemon herbed chicken (recipe from feastingathome.com)
- garlic herb corn carbonara with burrata (recipe from halfbakedharvest.com)
